For years, many Chartered Accountants avoided digital marketing because they were unsure what ICAI allowed. That position has changed significantly. In December 2025, the ICAI Council approved major amendments to its advertisement and website guidelines, with the revised 13th Edition of the Code of Ethics becoming applicable from 1 April 2026. The changes give CA firms greater flexibility in how they present their services, while important ethical and professional restrictions remain. Here is what CA firms should understand before marketing online. Can Chartered Accountants Advertise in India? Yes, CA members and firms now have greater scope to communicate their professional services under the revised ICAI framework. The ICAI Council approved amendments to the Advertisement and Website Guidelines as part of the revised 13th Edition of the Code of Ethics. The revised Code became applicable from 1 April 2026. The changes provide greater flexibility around the content and presentation of professional information. ICAI has also allowed push technology for non-exclusive services, such as accounting and consultancy, subject to the applicable guidelines. However, greater flexibility does not mean that every form of promotional marketing is automatically permitted. CA firms still need to ensure that their communication remains factual, professional, and consistent with the Code of Ethics. Why These Rules Exist Chartered accountancy is a regulated profession. The advertising and solicitation framework exists to protect professional dignity, public confidence, and ethical standards. For a CA firm, a marketing mistake can therefore become more than a branding problem. Content that crosses professional boundaries may create an ethical or disciplinary issue. This is why every website, advertisement, social post, directory listing, and campaign should be reviewed against the current ICAI Code of Ethics, rather than relying on older articles or outdated marketing advice. ICAI’s current Code of Ethics resources confirm that the revised 13th Edition is now the applicable framework from April 2026. What Changed in December 2025? At its 447th meeting in December 2025, the ICAI Council approved the revised 13th Edition of the Code of Ethics and amendments to the Advertisement and Website Guidelines. ICAI described the changes as providing greater creative flexibility and improving the professional visibility of Indian CA firms. One of the most important website changes is the permission to use push technology for services that are not exclusive to the CA profession, including examples such as consultancy and accounting. Exclusive professional services continue to be subject to the applicable restrictions under the revised framework. The revised framework also introduces greater flexibility around areas such as website content, professional visibility, social-media content, client assignments subject to permission, photographs, and certain online listings. What Still Needs Care? The 2026 changes should not be interpreted as unrestricted commercial advertising. CA firms should still avoid making misleading, unsubstantiated, comparative, or superiority-based claims. Statements such as “best CA firm,” “No. 1 accountant,” “top CA in Delhi,” or claims that imply superiority over other professionals should therefore be treated with caution. Firms should also avoid publishing information that is inaccurate, misleading, or inconsistent with their professional records. The safest approach is to make marketing factual, verifiable, professional, and informative. Before publishing a claim, ask whether it communicates useful information about the firm or attempts to pressure the public into choosing it. Pull vs Push on Your Website The distinction between pull and push technology remains important. Pull technology is where a person actively searches for or requests information and then accesses the firm’s website or service information. The revised framework provides greater flexibility for push technology relating to non-exclusive services. This creates more room for firms to communicate information around areas such as accounting and consultancy through appropriate digital channels. However, firms should not assume that every service can be promoted in the same way. Before launching email campaigns, alerts, outreach, or other push-based communication, identify whether the service is exclusive to the CA profession and check the applicable provisions of the current Code. Marketing Activities That Can Fit Within the Framework There are many ways for a CA firm to build visibility without turning its marketing into aggressive solicitation. A professional website A well-structured website can explain the firm’s services, introduce partners and team members, identify relevant areas of experience, and provide useful information about the practice, subject to the current website guidelines. Educational content Articles and resources covering GST, TDS, income tax, audit, accounting, compliance deadlines, and regulatory changes can demonstrate expertise while providing genuine value to business owners. Google Business Profile An accurate Google Business Profile can help prospective clients discover the firm locally. Keep the business name accurate and consistent, and ensure that profile information does not contain misleading promotional claims. Newsletters and client alerts The revised framework gives greater flexibility around push technology for non-exclusive services. This can create opportunities for appropriate newsletters, alerts, and updates concerning areas such as accounting and consultancy, provided the communication complies with the applicable provisions. LinkedIn and thought leadership Educational LinkedIn content, webinars, podcasts, professional presentations, and industry commentary can help a CA build professional visibility. The revised Code also provides greater flexibility around certain contemporary forms of communication and professional content. CA Firms vs Non-CA Practices This distinction is important. The ICAI Code of Ethics applies to ICAI members and CA firms. A non-CA business providing services such as bookkeeping, GST assistance, or general tax consultancy is not automatically governed by the ICAI professional advertising framework. However, non-CA businesses still need to comply with applicable Indian laws, consumer-protection requirements, intellectual-property rules, and advertising-platform policies. A CA should also be careful when marketing through another entity, such as a management consultancy company. The entity, ownership structure, service being promoted, and applicable ICAI provisions should all be considered before launching the campaign. A Simple ICAI Marketing Compliance Checklist Before publishing a website page, advertisement, social post, directory listing, or email campaign, check: ICAI’s current Code of Ethics resources should be treated as the primary reference because the applicable framework has changed substantially since the older 2020 guidance. Frequently Asked Questions Want Visibility Without Putting

Most accounting firms live in two modes: overloaded in filing season and quiet the rest of the year. The firms that escape this cycle do two things well. They convert one-time clients into monthly retainers, and they market around the compliance calendar instead of reacting to it. Here is how to do both. How Do Accounting Firms Convert One-Time Clients into Retainer Clients? Accounting firms convert one-time clients into retainers by doing the first job exceptionally well, identifying what ongoing compliance the client needs, offering a clear monthly or annual package soon after, following up at the right moments in the compliance calendar, and tracking retainer conversion and revenue per client rather than total filings. Why Retainers Decide the Value of Your Practice A one-off ITR or registration pays once and then needs replacing. A business client on monthly GST, TDS, bookkeeping, payroll, and annual compliance pays every month, refers peers, and often grows into audit and advisory work. Its lifetime value can be significantly higher than that of a single filing. A practice built on retainers has more predictable income, smoother workloads, and a stronger foundation for growth. A practice built mainly on seasonal filings has to win much of its revenue again every year. Treat the First Job as an Audition Many future retainer clients arrive for a single task: a GST registration, a company incorporation, a notice reply, or an ITR with business income. How that first job goes can determine whether they stay. Respond quickly, explain clearly, deliver on time, and show that you understand their business rather than simply completing a form. A client who feels properly looked after is already much more receptive to an ongoing service conversation. Spot the Ongoing Need and Name It Every first job can reveal what the client will need next. A new GST registration may mean monthly or quarterly returns. A new private limited company may need ROC filings, statutory audit, and TDS compliance. A freelancer with growing income may need advance tax planning and bookkeeping. Record these needs during onboarding, then present them back to the client as a simple roadmap. Many business owners do not have a complete picture of their compliance obligations, so explaining what is due and when can itself become a valuable part of the relationship. Offer Clear Service Packages Owners often find it difficult to buy vague, hourly accounting support. They find it easier to evaluate clearly defined service packages. For example, a monthly compliance package might cover GST, TDS, and bookkeeping, while an annual startup package could cover ROC filings and audit coordination. Define what is included, how communication works, response expectations, and what happens when a notice arrives. Share pricing privately in proposals or consultations where appropriate and ensure all marketing and fee communication follows applicable professional rules. Market Around the Compliance Calendar Accounting demand follows deadlines: ITR season, GST return dates, advance tax instalments, March year-end, audit season, and annual ROC filings. Each creates a predictable period of increased demand. Plan your content, ads, email campaigns, and Google Posts several weeks before each wave, so your firm is visible before business owners urgently need help. Use quieter months for nurture: client alerts about relevant rule changes, educational content, account reviews, and conversations about upcoming business needs. The compliance calendar becomes a growth calendar when marketing is planned around it instead of reacting to deadlines. Follow Up at the Right Moments Timing matters more than persistence. The strongest opportunities to discuss ongoing support are often shortly after a successful first job, before the client’s next major compliance deadline, or when their business changes, such as crossing a turnover threshold, hiring employees, or expanding operations. Simple WhatsApp and email follow-up sequences can make sure these moments are not missed. Many firms never follow up after completing the first assignment, which leaves substantial recurring-revenue opportunities untouched. Grow Existing Retainers into Advisory Retainer clients can also become the strongest source of higher-value work. A business receiving monthly compliance support may eventually need tax planning, audit support, fundraising assistance, financial forecasting, or virtual CFO services. Schedule an annual review with each retainer client to understand how the business has changed and what support it may need next. These conversations can deepen the relationship, increase revenue per client, and make the firm more valuable to the client than a provider they contact only when a deadline appears. Measure Revenue per Client, Not Total Filings Total filings and enquiry counts can make a busy season look successful even when the practice is not becoming more valuable. Track: These numbers show whether your practice is building a stronger recurring-revenue base and which services and acquisition channels bring clients who actually stay. Accounting firms often try one ad platform, get a flood of cheap ITR enquiries or no results at all, and decide paid marketing does not work for accountants. The real issue is usually using the wrong platform for the wrong job. Google, Meta, and LinkedIn each reach business owners at a different moment. Should an Accounting Firm Use Google Ads, Meta Ads, or LinkedIn? Use Google Ads to capture business owners already searching for accounting, GST, bookkeeping, or registration services. Use Meta Ads to reach SME owners locally and retarget site visitors. Use LinkedIn Ads for founders, CFOs, and larger companies needing audit, advisory, or virtual CFO services. Most firms should start with Google, then add one additional platform once tracking and conversion systems are working. Three Platforms, Three Different Jobs Google Ads captures demand that already exists, such as an owner searching for GST registration or outsourced bookkeeping right now. Meta Ads creates demand among local business owners who are not searching yet but may need an accountant soon. It is also useful for retargeting people who have already interacted with your website or content. LinkedIn Ads reaches decision-makers by professional role, company size, and industry, making it more suitable for higher-value audit, advisory, and CFO services. Treating these platforms as interchangeable is the core mistake. Each works best when it is given the job it was built for. Check Professional Rules Before You Spend Chartered accountants operate under professional advertising and solicitation requirements, including applicable ICAI guidance. The exact position can differ depending on the nature of the entity and service being promoted. Campaigns should therefore focus on factual services, relevant expertise, and useful educational information rather than unsupported superiority claims, aggressive comparisons, or promotional messaging that may conflict with professional requirements. Before launching a campaign, review the latest applicable ICAI requirements for your specific practice and service structure. Google Ads: Capture Business Intent Google Ads is usually the fastest route to new business clients because it meets owners at the moment of need. The skill is in choosing the right keywords. Business-intent terms such as accounting services for small business, GST return filing for company, payroll outsourcing, or private limited company registration are more likely to attract owners who can become recurring clients. Bargain-focused searches such as cheapest ITR filing tend to attract price-sensitive enquiries. Use tightly organised keyword groups, relevant negative keywords such as free, salary, and online filing where appropriate, and send each campaign to a matching service page with a clear consultation form. The objective is not to generate the most leads. It is to generate enquiries from businesses that can become valuable long-term clients. Meta Ads: Local Awareness and Retargeting Many business owners do not search for an accountant until a deadline, compliance problem, or notice forces them to act. Meta Ads can keep your firm visible before that moment. Useful educational content around GST deadlines, compliance changes, bookkeeping mistakes, payroll issues, or common startup accounting problems can build familiarity with local business owners. Retargeting can then bring back people who visited your service pages but did not enquire. For smaller businesses and startups, simple lead forms combined with fast WhatsApp or phone follow-up can work well. Meta is generally better at creating and nurturing demand than capturing an owner who is already searching for an accountant. LinkedIn Ads: Decision-Makers and Higher-Value Work LinkedIn generally costs more per click, but it offers professional targeting that can be valuable for firms selling higher-value services. You can reach founders, directors, finance heads, CFOs, and other decision-makers based on professional and company characteristics. This makes LinkedIn particularly relevant for services such as statutory audit, internal audit, transfer pricing, virtual CFO, financial advisory, and specialised compliance. A single retained client can justify a substantially higher acquisition cost when the service has strong recurring value. Thought leadership, short explainers, partner-led content, and industry-specific insights usually fit LinkedIn better than aggressive sales messages. LinkedIn is rarely the first channel for a small CA firm, but it can become powerful when the firm is deliberately moving upmarket. Landing Pages and Follow-Up Decide the Result Even a well-targeted ad can fail if it sends a busy business owner to a generic homepage. Each campaign should have a focused landing page that matches the search or advertisement, explains the service clearly, establishes the firm’s credentials and relevant experience, and makes requesting a consultation simple. Add a few sensible qualifying questions so your team understands the business size, service requirement, and urgency before making contact. Then respond quickly. Business owners often contact multiple firms, so a fast, professional response can make the difference between an enquiry becoming a consultation or going elsewhere. Which Should You Start With? With a limited budget, start with Google Ads using a focused list of business-intent keywords in your target city. Once enquiries and conversion tracking are working, add Meta for local awareness and retargeting if your focus is small businesses and startups. Add LinkedIn instead if your priority is larger companies, advisory work, audit, or CFO-level services. Running all three platforms simultaneously on a small budget often spreads spending too thinly to generate enough data to make good decisions. How to Split Budget and Measure Results There is no universal budget ratio. Track every enquiry back to its platform, campaign, keyword, or audience, then follow the lead through the actual sales outcome. Did it become a one-time filing job, a recurring retainer, a high-value advisory engagement, or nothing? Measure cost per retained client, not simply cost per lead. A cheap enquiry from someone looking for a free ITR service may be far less valuable than an expensive lead that becomes a recurring accounting client. Review the budget split regularly and adjust it around major compliance and filing periods. The best platform is ultimately the one producing profitable business clients who stay. When a business owner searches CA near me or GST consultant in their city, the three firms in the Google Map pack get most of the calls. For an accounting practice, ranking there is often the cheapest and most trusted source of new business clients. Here is how to earn that spot and keep it. How Do CA Firms Rank on Google Maps? CA firms rank on Google Maps by fully optimising their Google Business Profile, choosing an accurate primary category such as Chartered accountant or Accountant, keeping name, address, and phone consistent everywhere, earning steady genuine reviews from clients, posting regularly, and building local citations and service-plus-city pages. Google ranks local results on proximity, relevance, and prominence. Why the Map Pack Matters for Accounting Firms Business owners like an accountant they can visit when a notice arrives or a document needs signing, so most accounting searches carry local intent even without the words near me. The Map pack sits above the normal results and carries built-in credibility, because Google is choosing those firms to show first. For a profession where trust decides everything, a top-three position brings enquiries at a fraction of ad cost, from owners who already see you as an established local firm. Get Your Google Business Profile Right The profile is the foundation of Local SEO. Choose the most accurate primary category, such as Chartered accountant, Accountant, Tax consultant, or Bookkeeping service, based on what your firm actually does, and add secondary categories only where they are true. Fill every field: services such as GST filing, audit, bookkeeping, and company registration, a factual description of who you serve, opening hours, and attributes. Add real photos of the office, team, and signage. Keep the business name exactly as registered, because stuffing keywords into the name risks suspension and, for CA firms, conflicts with how the firm name should appear. NAP Consistency and Local Citations Your Name, Address, and Phone number must match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, ICAI records where relevant, and every directory. Weak NAP consistency confuses Google and weakens ranking. Build local citations on reputable business and professional directories, and clean up old listings that show a former office, a partner’s personal number, or a duplicate profile. Firms with several offices need a separate, accurate listing for each one. Reviews Build Ranking and Trust Together Reviews help you rank, and they reassure owners deciding who to trust with their books. Ask satisfied business clients at natural moments, after a smooth GST quarter, a completed audit, or a resolved notice. Make it easy with a direct review link. Respond to every review professionally and never reveal client details in a reply. Avoid fake or incentivised reviews entirely, both because Google removes them and because they damage a professional reputation far more than having fewer reviews. Service and Location Pages on Your Website Your website tells Google what you do and where. Build clear pages for each core service, including GST compliance, bookkeeping, audit, company registration, payroll, and tax planning, and link them from your Google Business Profile where it makes sense. If you serve specific business districts or industrial areas, create a focused page for each, with genuine local detail rather than copied text. This strengthens relevance while giving potential clients useful information before they contact you. Keep content factual and educational to stay within applicable professional guidelines. Google Posts and the Q&A Section Use Google Posts to share timely, factual updates, upcoming GST and advance tax deadlines, changes in compliance rules, or office hours during filing season. This keeps the profile active and positions the firm as current. Seed the Q&A section with real questions business owners ask: which services you cover, whether you work with startups, and how onboarding works. An active, helpful profile gives prospective clients more confidence before they make contact. Maintain Your Position All Year Local ranking is a position you defend, not a one-time setup. Competing firms keep adding reviews and updating profiles, especially before ITR season. Keep your profile fresh, keep reviews coming at a steady pace, keep citations accurate when details change, and keep publishing useful local content. Firms that stay consistent for months are better positioned to maintain visibility, while those that optimise once and go quiet risk losing ground. Getting more clients for a CA firm is not about being visible for a few weeks during ITR season. It is about building a system where business owners who need ongoing accounting, GST, and compliance support find you, trust you, and stay. Here is how the pieces fit together for an accounting practice in India. How Do CA Firms And Accountants Get More Clients Online? CA firms get more clients online by ranking in local search and the Google Map pack, running business-intent Google Ads, using Meta and LinkedIn to reach SME owners and founders, building trust with reviews and partner profiles, publishing helpful compliance content, and following up fast. Aim for retainer clients, not one-off filings, and stay within ICAI guidelines. Decide Which Clients You Actually Want Accounting demand splits into very different groups. Salaried individuals want an ITR filed once a year at the lowest price. Small business owners need monthly GST, TDS, bookkeeping, and payroll. Startups need incorporation, compliance, and often a virtual CFO. Growing companies need audits, tax planning, and advisory. Each group searches differently and is worth very differently over time. Firms that market to everyone often end up flooded with low-fee individual filings. Firms that define their ideal client, usually the business owner who can stay for years, can aim every channel at that person. The Channels That Bring Accounting Clients A handful of channels carry most qualified enquiries for an accounting practice. Each has a specific job and should be measured accordingly. Trust And Credentials Do The Converting A business owner is handing you their books, tax position, financial information, and compliance risk. They want to know who the partners are, what types of businesses you serve, and whether your team will respond when a notice arrives. Partner profiles, industries served, transparent service descriptions, relevant experience, and genuine reviews convert far better than generic slogans. Before spending more on traffic, make sure visitors can quickly understand why your firm is qualified and trustworthy. Filter Out Price Shoppers Early Online filing platforms have trained many people to view accounting as a commodity. If your marketing attracts primarily price-sensitive prospects, your team can spend hours on calls that never become profitable engagements. Clear service pages aimed at businesses, campaigns that avoid bargain-focused messaging, and a few qualifying questions in your enquiry form or WhatsApp flow can help filter prospects earlier. This allows your team to focus on business owners who value expertise, responsiveness, and a long-term professional relationship. Turn One-Time Work Into A Retainer Many valuable clients first arrive for a single requirement: GST registration, company incorporation, an ITR, bookkeeping cleanup, or another compliance task. That first engagement is an opportunity to demonstrate your firm’s value. After completing the initial work, present relevant monthly or annual service options where appropriate. A business that initially contacts you for one compliance task may later need bookkeeping, GST filing, payroll, tax planning, or advisory support. Build the path from first task to ongoing engagement into your process instead of waiting for clients to ask what else you can handle. Respect Professional Rules Chartered accountants operate under professional and ethical requirements, including ICAI rules governing advertising and solicitation. Regulatory requirements can change, so firms should verify the current rules before launching promotional campaigns or making claims about services, expertise, fees, rankings, or results. Marketing can still be educational and informative while remaining professionally responsible. The safest approach is to keep claims factual, avoid misleading guarantees, and review campaigns against the applicable ICAI requirements before publication. Measure Cost Per Retained Client, Not Cost Per Call A cheap enquiry that never becomes a paying client is not actually cheap. Track where each client came from, whether the engagement became recurring work, how much was spent acquiring that client, and how much revenue the relationship generates over time. Cost per retained client gives you a much clearer picture of which channels attract business owners who stay and which mainly produce seasonal or price-driven enquiries. Move budget toward channels that consistently produce profitable, long-term relationships rather than simply generating the largest number of leads.
